(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Lim Soon-hyeon = The National Ballet’s ‘La Bayadère’, which will thrill ballet fans, has finally been unveiled.

On the 29th, the National Ballet held a press call for ‘La Bayadère’ at the Seoul Arts Center Opera Theater in Seocho-gu, Seoul and released all three acts to the media.

The National Ballet’s ‘La Bayadère’ covers the same story as the Universal Ballet’s ‘La Bayadere’, which was performed at the same location from the 27th to the 29th of last month, but there were many differences in the detailed direction.

While the Universal Ballet Company focused on elaborate yet splendid choreography and stage sets, the National Ballet Company emphasized the grandeur and meticulousness of Russian ballet. Unlike the Universal Ballet, which was based on the original work created by Marius Petipa, known as the ‘father of classical ballet’ in 1877, the National Ballet used a new version of the choreography created in 2013 by legendary Russian choreographer Yuri Grigorovich.

The National Ballet added dance to scenes where only music flowed between acts and scenes that consisted only of mime. The addition of an abundance of ballet movements created a variety of things to see, breaking away from the monotonous structure of the play. In addition, rather than a flashy stage production, the plan that gave presence to the supporting actors along with the portrayal of the main character stood out.

The two works showed even more obvious differences in their endings. Universal Ballet’s work ended with a scene in which the main characters, Nikia and Solor, pledge their eternal love in the world of ghosts, which they could not achieve in reality. On the other hand, the National Ballet Company ended the play with ‘Solor’, who returned from a dream to reality, leaving a lasting impression with a monologue of regret. It rejected the stereotypical ending of the reunion of souls and revealed the characters’ complex inner lives, allowing the audience to become more immersed in the play.

However, the National Ballet followed the original production in the highlight, ‘Group Dance of the Ghosts’ in Act 3. ‘Group of the Ghosts’ is a scene that unfolds before the eyes of ‘Solor’ who visits the ‘world of ghosts’ to meet the poisoned ‘Nikia’, including ‘Night Lakeside’ from ‘Swan Lake’ and ‘Giselle’. Along with ‘Forest of Willies’, it is considered one of the three major ‘Ballet Blanc’ (white ballets).

The elaborate dance performed by 32 dancers in white costumes, performing a total of 46 arabesques (standing on one leg and extending the other leg backwards) was breathtakingly beautiful. It was a stage where the potential of the dancers of the National Ballet Company could be seen.

The dancing and acting of the main dancers of the National Ballet who participated in the press call that day were also impressive. Principal dancer Heo Seo-myeong, who performed ‘Solo’, and soloist Jo Yeon-jae, who performed ‘Nikia’, performed a perfect pas de deux throughout the three-hour performance. Su-yeon Ahn of ‘Gamjati’, who interferes with the love between ‘Solo’ and ‘Nikia’, raised expectations for this performance with her stable dance moves.

Park Se-eun and Kim Ki-min, world-renowned ballet stars who did not attend the press call but are active in Europe, are also scheduled to appear as ‘Nikia’ and ‘Solo’, respectively, in this performance.

The National Ballet’s ‘La Bayadère’ will be performed at the Seoul Arts Center Opera Theater from the 30th to the 3rd of next month.
