A long pink thread will color the province of Salerno next May 15th. The official announcement will only be made on November 15th, the day on which cycling’s “general staff” will meet to Roma for the presentation of the route. But the rumors – which with the passing of the days have become practically certainties, canceling out all the “discordant” rumors about the route – say that the 2025 edition of the Tour of Italy it will have a strong Salerno imprint. There will be no departures, much less arrivals, but the territory from Scafati to Sapri will be crossed (almost) entirely in the sixth stage, the one which will see the start from Potenza and the now traditional arrival – in Naples. The two capitals of Basilicata and Campania, therefore, will be united by one of the largest sporting events in the Bel Paese. Through a long pink thread that will see the Salerno area return as a major protagonist of the Giro d’Italia after last year’s absence and the chaotic arrival in the rain in the capital in 2023.
The imprint of our territory
Every certainty also on the route and on the centers of the province of Salerno that will be crossed by the “pink caravan”therefore, will arrive in just over a couple of weeks. But the game is practically over: in the sixth stage of the next edition, after the start in the heart of Lucania, the riders of the Giro d’Italia should enter the province of Salerno from Vallo di Diano, the natural “gate” between the two regions: from there, then, barring any twists and turns, the athletes will sail through the hinterland – probably even with some uphill stretches which can liven up the race much more easily – before reaching the Sele Plain and, subsequently, in the capital. The crossing of Salerno, then, opens up to various scenarios: this time, barring surprises, the Amalfi Coast. The ride from the city of Arechi should head towards Cava and then through the Agro up to Scafati from where the runners should carry out a sort of circumvallation of Vesuvius before heading towards the Neapolitan capital and the finish line which, in all likelihood, will be hoisted once again on the Caracciolo seafront. In short, most kilometers of the sixth stage of the next Giro d’Italia will be in the territory of the province of Salerno.
The nuanced Capaccio and Ascea hypotheses
Yet in recent months, when RCS Sport (the company responsible for organizing and “designing” the largest cycling event in Italy directed by Mauro Vegni) had gone looking for starting and finishing locations in the South for the first stages in the country – the start and the three initial stages will be in Albania, then a day of rest and the restart from Puglia – Salerno hypotheses had also made their way , in particular regarding the departure of the sixth stage. Among the possibilities advocated was that of Capaccio Paestum in an ideal hamlet capable of uniting the Temples, symbol of the Greek culture that colonized the South, and the archaeological excavations of Pompeii, the first neighboring town in the province of Napoli which also, for a long time, was in the running for an arrival. The polls, however, did not materialize despite the fact that those in the know whispered about a direct interest in making this hypothesis a reality on the part of Franco Alfieri, the president of the Province and mayor of Pedano, overwhelmed in recent weeks by the judicial investigation that led him to prison. And among the hypotheses put on the table before defining the route – not a simple undertaking: especially in the South, in fact, there was absolutely no crowd to organize a departure or arrival… – Ascea, the Cilento tourist resort already a finishing line, had also popped up final in the 2013 edition the success of Luca Paolini. Nothing has happened but the 2025 Giro will still have a strong Salerno imprint.
