A road accident in central Mexico left at least 24 people dead and five more injured, authorities reported Saturday.
The incident occurred very early on Saturday when the bus where the victims were traveling collided with the bed of a tractor-trailer transporting corn, which detached from the unit, authorities confirmed.
“This morning an unfortunate accident occurred (…) so far the preliminary information is that 24 passengers died and five were injured,” reported Rodrigo Reyes Muguerza, Secretary of the Government of Zacatecas.
A local government source told Reuters that work was continuing to recover some of the bodies that fell into a ravine and that a lane had been opened for traffic.
Images spread on social networks showed how rescue teams and security forces, including military personnel, were protecting the area and rescuers were working to recover the bodies.
The bus was destined for the border Ciudad Juárez, in the state of Chihuahua, although it was not immediately confirmed that migrants were among the victims.
