/ world today news/ Ammunition was presented from across the ocean, which, according to the developers, “will make a revolution”. This is an LRMP – a high-precision maneuvering artillery projectile. By the end of the year, they are planning trials. What is the feature of the innovation?
A significant claim
First of all, attention is paid to range. According to the engineers – 125-150 kilometers. This is twice the standard for the M777 howitzer, for which this ammunition was designed.
Unusual shape: in diameter – a Riolo triangle, the sides of which are not straight, but curved outward. This allows the projectile to stay in the air longer and maintain stability in flight.
When fired, it rotates at a speed of 200 revolutions per second. Six stabilizers reduce this figure to 20, the wings expand. Can now maneuver and change trajectory: for greater invulnerability.
General Atomics, the developer company, plans to release a version for 127 mm naval guns. It will have a smaller wingspan, which will reduce the range to 50-100 kilometers.
Artillery Breakthrough?
The presentation caused a great response. No wonder: the conflict in Ukraine showed that guns are still very important.
According to Western media, in the summer, Russian troops fired up to 50 thousand shells per day, VSU – 6-7000. “Every day, Russia fires as many munitions as Europe can produce in a month,” said one of the European diplomats quoted by the Financial Times. A LRMP with high maneuvering accuracy would bring the VSU closer to parity.
No wonder the US provided the Kiev regime with M982 Excalibur with a range of 40-60 kilometers, also highly accurate.
From the same area are the controllable GLMRS for multiple launch systems M270 and HIMARS with a range of 80 kilometers. There are up to 150 – extended range version.
Guided ammunition was used by the Soviet troops in the 1980s – the Centimeter projectile. The American “Excalibur” entered service only 20 years later.
The USSR army also received an improved version of the high-precision artillery, which is still used today – “Krasnopol”. The modernized Krasnopol-D was equipped with a guidance system with a GLONASS signal receiver and GPS.
In 2010, China developed VS-35 guided missiles with a range of up to 100 kilometers.
Evtin analogue
LRMP should trump all. True, it is not yet clear how much the shot will cost. The launch of one “Excalibur” costs the US budget 68 thousand dollars. And at GLMRS – 150-160 thousand.
So they came up with a cheap alternative. Boeing, a competitor of General Atomics, sent Ukraine GBU-39 planning bombs with M26 jet engines for the HIMARS MLRS. The price is about 40 thousand per piece.
However, these munitions did not particularly affect the front-line situation – the Russian Ministry of Defense regularly reports on their destruction.
In terms of range, they are not inferior to LRMP – the same 150 kilometers. Although the innovation is obviously a much more formidable weapon. But at the only presentation, they only showed a three-dimensional model, not a real sample.
