Labor MP suspended after video showing him punching man

British Labor Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Monday, October 28, described as “shocking” a video showing an MP from his party repeatedly hitting a man on the ground. The elected official in question was suspended by Labor.

Images of violence made the rounds on British social networks this weekend. Labor MP Mike Amesbury, 55, elected from the Cheshire region (north-west of England) was filmed without his knowledge this Saturday, October 26 at dawn in the town of Frodsham, in the process of attacking a punching a man before continuing to punch him to the ground. The video was made public by the tabloid Daily Mail.

Other images subsequently broadcast on social networks showed the elected official shouting at the same man.

An investigation has been launched by Cheshire Police. She confirms having questioned a 55-year-old man in connection with this incident, after several reports that an attack was underway in the city.

Asked during a press conference to present his government’s first budget, which is due to be unveiled on Wednesday, Keir Starmer said he had “seen the video”. “It’s shocking,” he commented.

“We acted very quickly to suspend him as a member and as an MP,” added Prime Minister Keir Stramer, before referring journalists to the ongoing investigation.

The Labor Party announced on Sunday that it had suspended the membership of Mike Amesbury, pending the results of an investigation. In a statement, Mike Amesbury said he “felt threatened” while enjoying an evening with friends. “I will not be making any further public comments but will of course co-operate with any investigation by Cheshire Police if they request it,” he added.

In July last year, a 56-year-old man was convicted in court of harassing the MP at his office in the town of Frodsham.
