Update from October 28, 2024, 6:03 p.m.: It will be loud and emotional for the first time in the Duisburg Schauinsland-Reisen-Arena! Marina Hegering, Merle Frohms and of course Alex Popp stand in the middle of the pitch and are officially farewelled with a bouquet of flowers and a photo collage before kick-off. Update from October 28, 2024, 5:55 p.m.: Christian Wück recently enjoyed a successful debut as national coach with the spectacular 4-3 win over the English women. Today’s friendly match is also his first home game as DFB coach. And the 51-year-old rotates a lot against Australia compared to the game against England. With the exception of Gwinn, Bühl, Nüsken, Minge and Rauch, all other positions have been filled.

First report from October 28, 2024: Duisburg – There won’t be a dry eye in Duisburg’s Schauinsland-Reisen-Arena this evening. With Alexandra Popp, a really big player is ending her career in the German national team in the friendly match against Australia (all TV information).
Today’s friendly kick against the Australians will mark Popp’s 145th international match – the striker has a total of 67 goals in the DFB uniform. A powerful statistic. And if the new national coach Christian Wück has his way, there should be at least one more goal today. “I hope that she is good enough to score a goal in her minutes,” said Wück before the game.
It was already clear before kick-off: “Poppi” would start the game as captain and be substituted before the break. The goalscorer doesn’t have much time to say goodbye properly. And the spectators in the stadium and in front of the TV sets can at least see one of Germany’s best strikers in action for a few minutes.

Popp disputes against Australia farewell game
Popp himself also assumes that it will be an emotional farewell. “When it comes over me, the tears will just roll,” said the 33-year-old before the game against Australia. Long-time companions such as former national coaches Horst Hrubesch and Slivia Neid will also be watching their farewell game.
“For me, she is a clear-cut type, always moves forward, takes responsibility and is always credible. She never pretends,” Hrubesch told the Kicker. “That means: Poppi always comes out in the end – that’s outstanding!”

But this evening will not be the only farewell to the German national team. In addition to Popp, her club colleagues Marina Hegering and Merle Frohms will also say goodbye.
