59. Minute: Triple changes for Germany: Brand, Dallmann and Wolter come on for Gwinn, Cerci and Bühl.

Germany – Australia 1:1 (1:1)

Johannes – Gwinn, Nüsken, Minge, Rauch – Gräwe, Linder – Endemann, Cerci, Bühl – PoppArnold – Carpenter, Kennedy, Hunt, Catley, Torpey – Fowler, Gorry, Cooney-Cross, Wheeler – Foord1:0 Cerci (5.) 1:1 Cooney-Cross (39.)

57. Minute: The DFB women acted more dominant again in the second half and pushed for the opening goal. The guests from Down Under are still lurking on the counterattack. However, the German defense chain has to be extremely careful here.

52. Minute: Yellow card for Linder! The German team actually had a corner, but the Matildas were able to clear and then started a lightning-fast counterattack via Cooney Cross. Linder initially intervenes successfully, but can then only help himself with a foul in the duel with Foord.

47. Minute: Australia also changes at half-time: Van Egmond now replaces Gorry in the game.

47. Minute: At the break, Wück makes two changes: Magull and Kleinherne come on for Gräwe and Minge.

46th minute: Let’s continue with the second half!

Half time: Alex Popp’s farewell game got off to a furious start! The DFB women went full speed from the first second and took the deserved lead through Cerci in the 5th minute. After Popp’s emotional substitution, Christian Wück’s team completely lost track. The Maltidas found their way into the game better and then had good chances, which Johannes was able to thwart. Shortly before the break, Cooney-Cross shocked the German team with an absolute dream goal from over 30 meters – the equalizer was absolutely fine at that point.

45+2. Minute: After two minutes of added time, the first half is over.

44. Minute: The German team responds with a good opportunity through Cerci. The goal scorer to make it 1-0 is served by Nüsken, then lobs the ball over her opponent Catley and then tries to beat Arnold with a header. However, her header has too little power and so the score remains 1:1.

39th minute: GOAL for Australia! Cooney-Cross scores to make it 1-1! Cerci plays a completely unnecessary bad pass in midfield. Cooney-Cross gratefully picks up the marble, briefly raises his head and then tries it from well over 30 meters. Johannes is too far in front of her box and can no longer block the long-range shot. An absolute dream goal for the Matildas, who have now earned the equalizer.

37. Minute: Substitution for Australia: Heyman comes on for Torpey.

32. Minute: That actually has to be 2-0! In a phase in which Germany seems to have completely lost their rhythm, Endemann finishes a few meters in front of the goal. However, her shot goes a good meter past the left post.

25. Minute: Next chance for Australia! Again it is Foord who causes danger. First she leaves Gwinn standing, then she tests Johannes again with a sharp shot. But the German keeper once again shows a brilliant reflex and keeps the zero.

22. Minute: The guests slowly find their way into the game and almost equalize through Foord. After Nüsken lost the ball, the Australians quickly switched gears and finished through striker Foord. But Johannes is there and can parry.

21. Minute: The game is now running again. The DFB women are no longer at the same pace as in the opening minutes, but are still dominant. The busy Endemann looks for Anyomi with a cross, but she cannot control the ball. It remains 1-0 for Germany.

Alexandra Popp will be thunderous Applause replaced

15th minute: And now the time has actually come! Popp will leave the DFB stage forever. The German football legend is substituted for Anyomi to thunderous applause. “Poppi” appears composed when she is substituted, tears are not yet rolling down her cheeks. They are still very emotional scenes. Thanks for everything, Alexandra Popp!

9. Minute: Even after the opening goal, it only goes in one direction: towards the goal of the Australian goalkeeper Arnold. A cross from Popp is initially able to clear the visitors’ defensive line, but then Rauch follows up, but her attempt only hits the post. This can continue like this.

5th minute: GOOOOOOOOR for Germany! Cerci scores 1-0! A bad pass in the Australians’ build-up game is punished coldly by Germany. Endemann doesn’t hesitate for long and crosses to the far post, where Cerci is lurking and heads in to take the lead. A tailor-made start for the German team!

4. Minute: Germany is pressing for the opening goal right from the start! After a foul by Hunt, the German team was awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area. The Australian is cautioned with a yellow card. However, the subsequent standard ends up in the Australian wall.

2. Minute: Fast start for the DFB women! Endemann is fed a long through ball. However, the VfL Wolfsburg player cannot fully control the ball and her shot lands next to Arnold’s box.

1. Minute: Let’s start in Duisburg! The game is on!

Update from October 28, 2024, 6:03 p.m.: It will be loud and emotional for the first time in the Duisburg Schauinsland-Reisen-Arena! Marina Hegering, Merle Frohms and of course Alex Popp stand in the middle of the pitch and are officially farewelled with a bouquet of flowers and a photo collage before kick-off. While Hegering and Frohms then make their way to their stands, Popp still has a half of football ahead of him.

Update from October 28, 2024, 5:55 p.m.: Christian Wück recently enjoyed a successful debut as national coach with the spectacular 4-3 win over the English women. Today’s friendly match is also his first home game as DFB coach. And the 51-year-old rotates a lot against Australia compared to the game against England. With the exception of Gwinn, Bühl, Nüsken, Minge and Rauch, all other positions have been filled.

Update from October 28, 2024, 5:39 p.m.: As a reminder: “Poppi” should only be used in the first half this evening. The DFB legend is expected to leave the field to a standing ovation in the first half. The captain’s armband then goes back to Giulia Gwinn.

Update from October 28, 2024, 5:07 p.m.: And the German starting line-up for today’s friendly match against Australia has just been published. As previously announced, Alexandra Popp will be on the pitch from the start in her farewell game and will lead the team onto the field as captain. Germany starts with this eleven:

Johannes – Gwinn, Nüsken, Minge, Rauch – Gräwe, Linder – Endemann, Cerci, Bühl – Popp

First report from October 28, 2024: Duisburg – There won’t be a dry eye in Duisburg’s Schauinsland-Reisen-Arena this evening. With Alexandra Popp, a really big player is ending her career in the German national team in the friendly match against Australia (all TV information).

Today’s friendly kick against the Australians will mark Popp’s 145th international match – the striker has a total of 67 goals in the DFB uniform. A powerful statistic. And if the new national coach Christian Wück has his way, there should be at least one more goal today. “I hope that she is good enough to score a goal in her minutes,” said Wück before the game.

It was already clear before kick-off: “Poppi” would start the game as captain and be substituted before the break. The goalscorer doesn’t have much time to say goodbye properly. And the spectators in the stadium and in front of the TV sets can at least see one of Germany’s best strikers in action for a few minutes.

Popp disputes against Australia farewell game

Popp himself also assumes that it will be an emotional farewell. “When it comes over me, the tears will just roll,” said the 33-year-old before the game against Australia. Long-time companions such as former national coaches Horst Hrubesch and Slivia Neid will also be watching their farewell game.

“For me, she is a clear-cut type, always moves forward, takes responsibility and is always credible. She never pretends,” Hrubesch told the Kicker. “That means: Poppi always comes out in the end – that’s outstanding!”

Not only Popp finished today National team career

But this evening will not be the only farewell to the German national team. In addition to Popp, her club colleagues Marina Hegering and Merle Frohms will also say goodbye. The focus tonight will undoubtedly be on the exceptional striker who is in front of her announced her resignation from the national team about a month ago.

“I always wore the eagle on my chest day after day and game after game with a lot of pride and honor,” said Popp before her last game in the Germany jersey. Wück and his coaching team will face the challenge of filling the gap left by Popp in the German offensive. With the furious 4-3 win against England, the team recently proved that they can be successful even without Popp. (where)
