Life is Strange: Double Exposure Review – Max’s Return to a Dimension of Mystery and Supernatural Powers

About two weeks ago we gave you one a brief preview give up Life is Strange: Double Exposure based on the first two episodes. Soon after, we were lucky enough to be able to start with the full game and now we can share with you our complete final verdict. Can Deck Nine remove the doubts from the preview?

For those who haven’t read the preview, we’ll explain the story in brief without giving any spoilers that you couldn’t read in the preview yet. Years after the events in Arcadia Bay, we are brought back to Max Caulfield. She is now studying at Caledon University and has lost her powers that allowed her to turn back time. Of course, these tragic events have left their mark. Nevertheless, Max has her affairs in order, until one of her best friends is killed. No one knows who did the crime, but Max is determined to find out. The event also returns her supernatural powers, although this time she cannot travel through time with them. What she suddenly turns into is being able to travel to another dimension, one where her friend Safi is still alive!

The first two episodes of Life is Strange: Double Exposure mainly revolves around Safi’s murder and Max discovering that she has new powers and where she will use them. You will also get to know the characters who will play an important role in the story. Based on this, we remained cautiously committed to the outlook. Fortunately, it seems that this warning is not unfounded, because from the third episode onwards the mystery is completely lit and will not let us go until we see the end credits. Without wanting to go into too much detail, the events keep getting crazy and the two dimensions Max finds himself in seem to have more to them than first thought. In that respect, it hits right on the chords that for us still make the first game the best in the series. With all due respect to Max and Chloe’s successors, their successors have no longer reached the level and complexity of the story. to the Double exposure And!

Graphically, too, it seems since then True colors took steps again. This is especially evident in the lighting and facial expressions of the characters. This makes of Double exposure absolutely beautiful game. In addition, the atmosphere is also well done. It is winter when the events take place, which means that everything around Caledon is covered in a thick layer of snow. Combined with the old school castle look and the other cozy spaces, this ensures that it is an environment where you would love to walk around and stop from time to time to enjoy it. to include everything.

What remains is the sometimes wooden acting. The pronunciation of the voices does not always match the situation and that sometimes reduces the impact of a scene. Imagine being very cheerful all of a sudden after a difficult situation and things like that. On the other hand it is Life is strange I’ve always had this and maybe it’s part of the vibe the games bring. It’s dramatic, but also light-hearted and not too heavy. Max is also a great character with his nerdy sense of humor and sometimes unique thoughts. The rest of the main characters are also interesting and have their own deeper plot that explains why they are the way they are.

This might not be a game for people who like to rack their brains over puzzles. That’s one of our complaints: Deck Nine often tells you what to do: “Travel to this point and talk to that character” and that’s followed by: ” Travel to the other side and talk to that person again about what you just found out.” You never have to think about what to do next. The most important gameplay element is the choices you make during conversations. Well done. You don’t know what the exact impact of what you say will be, but if something interesting happens, you’ll always know how to go back to something you chose before. You will also sometimes regret certain actions after getting to know characters later in the game Double exposure want to play a few times to find out what can be done differently.

However, it’s worth it if you occasionally give Deck Nine orders and walk around yourself. You can use Max’s powers in two ways. The first is that you can look into the other side and thus ear without seeing. Here you can also learn more about the story and the characters in it. This way you can find pieces of the puzzle that you would otherwise have missed. There are also a few side stories that are revealed this way. The other way you can use Max’s powers is by traveling to the other side, which will reveal other things where you are at that moment. We didn’t do it enough in our playthrough, but we definitely plan to play again and take a little more time.

Life is Strange: Double Exposure In our opinion, it is a very successful game. The renewal of my experience with Max feels very good and the story with the different dimensions is also very interesting. It might start off a little too slow, but the next thing is pretty cool! We’d like to think a little more for ourselves at times.

We played Life is Strange: Double Exposure on the PlayStation 5. The game is also available for Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch and PC.
