Novartis scandal and withdrawal of witness protection: Don’t anyone dare to report corruption (again) –

As long as the blind Justice “sees its light” the Democracy loses it.

It is unknown if the 57 words in the New Code of Criminal Procedure that the Minister of Justice Giorgos Floridis added about protected witnesses are the tombstone under which both the Novartis scandal and many other scandals in the future that may not even be “told” will be buried.

And in this game, the Mitsotakis government is not alone since the case involves members of the opposition who supported with all their might the effort to cover up the case.

The so-called witnesses of public interest, in English “whistleblower” are persons who contribute with their information to the disclosure and prosecution of cases, such as bribery or bribery of political officials, employees, judicial officers, intermediaries and so on.

For the legal protection of public interest witnesses, the law protects their anonymity with the aim of encouraging the disclosure of corruption information, with the aim of protecting the Law and Democracy.

Of course, this is a general definition for protected witnesses with one and only goal: To expose corruption but at the same time not to put their lives in danger since there are (often) large financial and not only interests against them.

If all of this sounds perfectly reasonable, if all of this has led to revelations of scandals, if based on this data the Novartis scandal in the USA was “closed” with a settlement of 346 million dollars against the company that the pharmaceutical giant had to pay in Greece, he was breathing (from the beginning) another wind, it is not “reasonable” in Greece.

According to Reuters, authorities said Novartis Hellas conspired from 2012 to 2015 to bribe officials of state-controlled hospitals and clinics in Greece to buy drugs such as Lucentis. At the same time, it had irregularities in its books in order to hide these bribes.

But in Greece the further investigation for responsibilities higher up had to stop with the deconstruction of the witnesses with the help of the mass media.

The last act was that of Giorgos Floridis with the political players – whose names have been heard as being involved in the scandal – celebrating.

It is no coincidence that politicians whose names were involved in the Novartis case, namely Antonis Samaras, Andreas Loverdos and Adonis Georgiadis, had announced, despite the strict legal regime that protected the witnesses, that they would take revenge on them.

Now Mitsotakis and Floridis are leading the removal of the anonymity of the Novartis witnesses, putting a tombstone on the scandal and at the same time sending a message to those who think of doing something similar in the future…

A government intervention can change all the facts of Justice…
