The attorney general of the dictatorship of Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela, Tarek William Saab, accused this Saturday the president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, of using the accident he had a week ago, in which he hit the back of the head after falling in the official residence of the Presidency, to “lie” to the BRICS and thus veto the entry of the Caribbean nation into the group.
“Lula reappeared smiling and unharmed, making it clear that he used said ‘accident’ to lie to Brazil, the BRICS and the entire world, a fact for which he should be investigated,” Saab said on Instagram.
The prosecutor maintained that there is “great unease” in the Latin American left and the “revolutionary movements of the world” due to the “undignified and disastrous performance of the Lula Government at the BRICS summit, held this week in Russia, by “vetoing and “cowardly attack Venezuela, obediently following the instructions of the historical enemies of our people.”
Likewise, he said that he received information from “direct and close sources” in Brazil who informed him that the Brazilian president “manipulated an alleged accident” to use it as an “alibi, in order not to attend” the BRICS summit, and that this version “was nothing more than a deception to perpetrate the veto against Venezuela.”
“What happened very strongly as a rumor, unfortunately, seems to be corroborated with a video released yesterday, where President Lula is seen healthy, using his faculties and acting with total cynicism,” he added.
On Friday, the bulletin from the Sírio-Libanês Hospital in Brasilia, where Lula went, indicated that the president “is fit to carry out his work routine” in the Brazilian capital.
From the note it is clear that the medical team has not yet released the head of state to travel by plane.
The president could not travel to Russia this week for the summit of leaders of the BRICS, a forum of emerging economies that make up nine countries including Brazil, Russia and China, because of that domestic accident.
This Friday, Lula reappeared at an official event at the Planalto Palace, headquarters of the Presidency, to participate in the signing of a reparation agreement for the victims of the Mariana mining tragedy, which took place in 2015.
Brazilian government sources said on Friday that the dictator of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, tried to pressure “at the last minute” to get the Caribbean nation included in the list of countries associated with the BRICS, to which Brazil reacted by demonstrating against “emphatic” way.
Brazil refused to allow Venezuela to join the list of associated countries because, “at this time,” relations between both countries “are not friendly,” according to the sources.
At the end of the summit, the Maduro regime described Brazil’s veto as a “hostile gesture” and an “aggression” against the nation’s interests.
The special advisor to the Brazilian presidency, Celso Amorim, stated last Thursday that the exclusion of Venezuela from the BRICS group was not due to political reasons, but rather to a “breakdown of trust” with the Nicolás Maduro regime.
As Amorim explained, the Chavista regime failed to fulfill a key promise, which resulted in Brazil’s decision to block Venezuela’s entry into the organization during the summit held in Kazan, Russia.
“The issue with Venezuela does not have to do with democracy, but with a breach of trust. They told us one thing and it was not done,” Amorim stressed in an interview with O Globo.
The advisor recalled that after the presidential elections on July 28, Brazilian president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva sent Amorim to Caracas to meet with Maduro, who promised to deliver the minutes of the National Electoral Council (CNE) that supposedly confirmed his re-election. However, these minutes were never presented, which generated distrust in the Brazilian government.
