Alexandra Popp will appear in the DFB jersey for the last time against Australia
Shortly before her withdrawal from the national soccer team, Alexandra Popp commented on the negative aspects of her fame. She explained that it “feels like” there is hardly any privacy left. In a media round, the long-time DFB captain said that you have to learn to deal with it “when you are out and about in cities for private purposes, you are actually recognized, you are constantly being spoken to – and you would actually like to switch off from all the hustle and bustle .” She admitted that sometimes she coped better and sometimes worse, “I can’t deny that either.”
The 33-year-old VfL Wolfsburg striker, who has been successful for the national team 67 times, announced her retirement from the national team at the end of September. She will play her 145th and final international match on Monday in Duisburg against Australia (6.10 p.m./ZDF).
It all started in Duisburg
For Popp, who describes herself as a “football romantic,” it is a particular joy that her farewell is taking place in the city in the Ruhr area. “There’s nothing better than ending the whole thing where it started.” Popp started her Bundesliga career in 2008 with what was then FCR 2001 Duisburg and played against North Korea (3-0) on February 17, 2010 in the MSV Duisburg stadium their first international match. Now the circle closes at exactly this point.
