Winter time has started again

Winter time has started again. On the night from Saturday to Sunday at 3:00 AM the clock was reset to 2:00 AM. This means it is standard time again. From now on, it will be light earlier in the morning and the lights will have to be turned on earlier in the evening.

Artificial summer time has been in effect in the Netherlands since 1977 and was introduced because the light then corresponds better with the hours when most people are awake. The idea was that this means less lighting is needed in the evening and energy is saved. However, it is doubtful whether this actually results in savings.

Since 1980, the setting of summer and winter time has been regulated at European level. The European Commission wanted to stop the scheme in 2018, but the Netherlands, among others, postponed a decision on this.

Our country wants to continue to use the same time as neighboring countries, but wants a better argument from the committee about the advantages and disadvantages of abolishing summer time. For example, the change of times would have a negative effect on people’s biorhythms.

Winter time lasts six months; Summer time starts again on the last weekend of March.
