Carlos Sainz won the time trial in Mexico

Carlos Sainz Jr., the Spanish driver of Ferrari, was the fastest in Saturday’s qualifying session for the Formula 1 Mexican Grand Prix, so he will be able to start from the front in Sunday’s race.

This is the first pole position of the 30-year-old driver this year and the sixth of his career.

Max Verstappen, the Dutch driver of Red Bull, who is driving for his fourth world championship title in a row, and who is leading the overall standings, will be able to start next to Sainz.

Lando Norris, the British driver of McLaren, who is still fighting for the World Cup title, grabbed the third starting place in qualifying, and Monaco’s Charles Leclerc will be able to start the race next to him with the other Ferrari.

Sergio Pérez, the favorite of the home crowd, was already forced to retire in the first stage of qualifying and will only be able to start from 18th place. It was an even bigger surprise that the Australian Oscar Piastri didn’t make it to the second stage with McLaren, he got the 17th starting spot.

The 71-lap Mexican Grand Prix starts at 21:00 Hungarian time on Sunday.
