1,135 runners completed the full 42.195 kilometers of the Dresden Marathon in 2023. A year later, the dedicated organizational team was able to look forward to an increase of around 20 percent, so that a total of 1,360 athletes finished the marathon. Several thousand more running enthusiasts came together over the other distances on offer, making the Dresden Marathon a first-class running festival in 2024 too.
The Kenyan Julius Kiprono Tarus (Modedis Running Team, 2:14:44 hours) ran the fastest in Dresden. Behind them were Eticha Hailu (Eintracht Frankfurt, 2:27:39 hours) from Ethiopia, Samsom Tesfazghi Hayalu from Eritrea (SV Sömmerda, 2:28:09 hours) and Dejen Atanaw-Ayele (Eintracht Frankfurt, 2:29:44 hours). ) three other runners had peak times of under 2:30 hours. The Austrian Peter Frohnwieser (Team Salomin/Dresdner Laufsportladen), who many would have wished for a place on the overall podium after coming fourth behind a Kenyan trio last year, came fifth this time in 2:36:24 hours.
Caroline Jeruto Chesir (Modedis Running Team, 2:35:08 hours), a Kenyan, also won in the women’s category. Behind them, Emely Josephine Günther (TU Dresden) and Kristin Hempel (USV Erfurt) drew attention to themselves. The two German runners achieved strong times of 2:55:01 and 2:57:54 hours respectively. The top 5 was completed by Maria Miether (200 pulse, 3:00:44 hours) and Sophie Schnieders from Munich (3:05:19 hours). It was noticeable that numerous athletes from Poland and several other countries came to Dresden for the marathon.
König and Meier win the half marathon
This became clear, among other things, by looking at the result lists for the half marathon. While the first six places among men were all German athletes, Katarzyna Choma (Jelenia Góra, 1:24:35 hours) and Kinga Gomolysek (1:25:15 hours) from Poland came third and fourth among the women . Cathleen Meier (Bohlig running team) deservedly won in 1:22:20 hours ahead of Hannah Schönmuth (Athletics Team Dresden, 1:24:27 hours).
In the absence of Marcus Schöfisch, who had decided to start in Frankfurt at short notice, half marathon winner Patrick König (European Marathon Görlitz/Laufhaus Oderwitz) was one of the well-known regional running greats. He ran 1:07:22 hours and won just ahead of Richard Vogelsang (TSG Markkleeberg X Kraft Runners, 1:07:31 hours). Lukas Lembcke from SV Kali Wolmirstedt came third (1:10:09 hours).
Over 1,600 finishers over ten kilometers
In addition, it was also possible to run in the tenth marathon over 4.2 kilometers, as part of a marathon relay or as an individual starter over the classic 10-kilometer distance. For example, 1,610 starters completed the ten kilometers. Willy Hirsch (Pro Team Hotel Jakob, 32:18 minutes) and Amelie Hagedorn (TV Burglengenfeld, 41:34 minutes) were happy about the victory. Hirsch in particular won with a clear lead of almost two minutes.
