/ world today news/ The journalist Hristo Grozev is accused in absentia of organizing the escape abroad of the publisher of The Insider (recognized as a foreign agent in the Russian Federation) Roman Dobrokhotov (recognized as a foreign agent in the Russian Federation). This was reported to TASS on Friday by the law enforcement authorities.
„The reason for Grozev’s arrest in absentia is the accusation that he helped Dobrokhotov illegally cross the border of the Russian Federation, who in turn was a witness in a defamation case.” the source said.
As reported by TASS, on Friday in the Lefortovsky Court of Moscow, Grozev was charged in absentia under Part 3 of Art. 33 and part 1 of Art. 322 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (“Organization of illegal border crossing”). The journalist was arrested in absentia for two months. He faces up to four years in prison.
Grozev was born in Plovdiv in 1969. He worked for local radio stations and other media, in 1995 he was invited by the American Metromedia to work with the Russian assets of this company. He launched “Radio Nika” in Sochi, “Kanal Melody” and “Eldoradio” in St. Petersburg and dozens of radio stations in the Baltic countries, Finland, Bulgaria, Hungary.
Grozev later acquired shares in Russian radio stations from Metromedia. In 2006, he sold all his media projects in Russia, and in 2016 his permission to remain in the Russian Federation was revoked by the FSB. Grozev is a business partner of media manager Karl Habsburg-Lorraine.
He actively participated in the activities of the Bellingcat publication (included by the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation in the register of foreign agents), which tried to establish the circumstances of the poisoning of the blogger Alexei Navalny and covered a number of other high-profile incidents. Bellingcat’s activities have been recognized by the General Prosecutor’s Office as undesirable in the Russian Federation.
