UN: Emergency Security Council meeting at Iran’s request –

The UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting on Monday at Iran’s request following Israel’s deadly missile strikes in retaliation for Tehran‘s Oct. 1 attack.

The Swiss presidency of the UN Security Council said on Sunday that the meeting would take place at the request of Iran, which is backed by Algeria, China and Russia.

The meeting will start at 15.00 New York time (21.00 Greek time).

Iran’s letter

In a letter sent to the UN secretary-general and the president of the Security Council, Iran’s foreign minister called for “an urgent convening of the Security Council to take a decisive position and condemn this attack,” according to the Iranian Foreign Ministry statement.

In his letter, Abbas Araktsi states that “most of the missiles were intercepted by Iranian anti-aircraft systems,” but notes that the attack “damaged targets” and killed four soldiers.

The Israeli attack constitutes a “clear violation of the sovereignty” of Iran, which “reserves the right (…) to respond to this criminal attack,” the foreign minister wrote in his letter.
