Time has had to be balanced to overcome the time difference, in addition to classes and daily activities. After a few messages on WhatsApp and a few days, it was possible to speak with the young woman from Trujillo, Alba García Cancho. Since the beginning of the course, he has been in Canada, thanks to one of the 450 scholarships that the Amancio Ortega Foundation has awarded to study 1st year of Baccalaureate in Canada or the United States. Alba admits that she has been lucky that it is Canada, because “I like the cold, hockey, the snow and the Canadians, who are super nice.” Specifically, he lives these months in Sydney, in the Nova Scotia area.

What has been her school until the end of the course, María de la Paz Orellana, boasts of this student not only for obtaining the prized scholarship, but also because Alba has been one of the six students in the region who has obtained one of the Extraordinary Awards for Compulsory Secondary Education, corresponding to the 2023-2024 academic year.

Although he took the exams to achieve this recognition in July, the result was not official until the end of September, when the Official Gazette of Extremadura published the granting of these awards. “I am very happy because it means that the effort I have made these four years has been rewarded,” she says.

Evidence

This young woman had to pass math, language and English tests. “Only the best records from each center could be presented and always with an average grade in ESO higher than 9,” they explain from the Trujillo educational center on their social networks. Alba acknowledges that they were not very difficult because she had already seen the syllabus in class during these years. When the award was made official, there was no shortage of congratulations from family and friends. “What I am best at is mathematics,” he details.

That official announcement, like various congratulations, already caught him in Canada. This young woman, over the phone, appears self-confident, easy to relate to and adapt to new situations. These characteristics have surely made living together in a country so different from Spain easier. One of the pieces of advice his parents have given him is to take advantage of this incredible opportunity, because it could be unique.

This woman from Trujillo, the eldest of two siblings, is clear that she wanted to live an experience of this type, even though her parents were not very convinced. “They tell me they miss me a lot,” he adds.

At first, he considered going to the United States and, later, the possibility of Ireland arose, due to its proximity. “I had that illusion of going out.” Finally, he found the Amancio Ortega Foundation program to apply for a scholarship. To do this, he had to go through three phases, which he passed successfully. Among other aspects, grades, knowledge of English and family income were taken into account. He has no doubt that he was right to be able to enjoy this course on Canadian soil. He will return to Spain at the end of June.

The classes

Currently, this young woman from Extremadura lives with a host family. He usually gets up around 7:30 a.m. to go to school. Recognize that the classes are very different from the Spanish system. One of the aspects that stands out is that there the students change classrooms to attend classes, instead of the teachers. Furthermore, he believes that the system is more focused on the practical part. From there, you can do different extracurricular activities. «What I like most is that there are people from many countries, beyond Canadians and Spaniards. “You meet many people and many cultures,” he points out. This country will also give you the possibility of doing activities that you cannot do in Spain. One of them is hockey. In fact, he has had the opportunity to watch several games and intends to try.

The worst thing, in his opinion, is that he has to go everywhere by car. Remember that in Trujillo you have the freedom to walk almost everywhere.

Once he returns to Spain, he will complete the 2nd year of Baccalaureate. Later, he would like to study Biomedicine in some “cool” place in Spain outside of Extremadura, but he does not rule out going abroad either.
