Oak Island.- At least 12 acres of forest were destroyed by a fire on Oak Island, in Brunswick County, that began on Friday, October 25.
The incident began at 3:30 p.m. in the wooded area known as Williamson Tract, west of EF Middleton Blvd.
The Fire Department was alerted by a passerby who reported the fire on Oak Island.
Fire Unit 171 quickly arrived to assess the situation and found flames advancing between Maxwell Drive and Seafield Drive.
Given the danger, at 4:30 p.m., the Oak Island Police Department closed all traffic on EF Middleton Blvd.
This measure, although it impacted traffic, was crucial to allow access for emergency vehicles and avoid risks to the community.
Later, northbound lanes were enabled to facilitate circulation.
As the fire spread, the North Carolina Forest Service established a plow line at 8:00 p.m. that managed to contain the fire, preventing its expansion.
After containing the flames, EF Middleton Blvd. was reopened, but due to heavy smoke, it was closed again from 3:30 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 26.
In total, it is estimated that between 8 and 12 acres were consumed by the fire.
Although no immediate dangers to the public are expected, intermittent road closures due to smoke are anticipated, depending on weather conditions.
Regional coordination and support
The response to this fire involved a total of 32 units from various agencies, including the Oak Island Fire Department, the Bolivian Fire Department, and the Oak Island Police Department.
Fire departments from Southport, St. James, Sunset Harbor and Zion Hill, as well as the North Carolina Forest Service, also collaborated.
Additional support was provided by the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office and Brunswick County Emergency Management.
County Emergency Communications facilitated dispatch and communication operations.
