“There is a lot of wind on the stage. “They just don’t learn,” he complained in an interview with the streaming service Viaplay about the conditions in the Westfalenhalle– and cited the conditions as part of the explanation for his clear defeat in the round of 16 against Gary Anderson (European Darts Championship: The final day in TV on SPORT1 and in LIVESTREAM).

The three-time world champion explained: “Every darts expert sees how my arrows are positioned. And then they say all the doors are closed. They can kiss my ass. None of this is true. Then they say you have to be professional enough to handle it. But I also have my limits. The PDC can scratch its head because this is not the first time.”

After the European Championship last year, MvG had already criticized the local organization – although at the time it was unclear why exactly: “There were things that I wanted to address, but no one in authority responded to them. That disappointed me.”
What’s wrong with van Gerwen? Anderson is also surprised
Whether it was due to the conditions or not: Van Gerwen is currently far from the glory of earlier days. The 35-year-old has yet to win a major this year; most recently, MvG suffered a white wash in round 1 against Daryl Gurney at the World Grand Prix.

Now van Gerwen, who didn’t throw a single 180 against Anderson, was puzzling – including his opponent: “He had difficulties. This is no longer the Michael van Gerwen I used to play against here. That’s not Michael up there,” Anderson said ITV.
Around a month and a half before the start of the World Cup at Ally Pally, van Gerwen currently does not look like a top candidate to win his first world championship title since 2019.
