MotoGP, Bagnaia wins pole in Thailand. Martin (third) also on the front row

Pecco Bagnaia on pole in Buriram: the world champion closes qualifying with the best time on the Thai track ahead of Bastianini and Martin. At 10am this morning he starts ahead of everyone in the sprint race – as well as tomorrow in the GP: the start at 9am Italian time – and it could be an important occasion in a race that promises to be extremely delicate, 3 events before the end of the most balanced world championship ever. «It’s the beginning of what we hope will be a good day», smiles the Piedmontese. «It was important to be on the front row, I knew that pole could come because we are going really fast: we have high potential, on this track with my driving style I can be more incisive. Finding the right setting immediately on Friday was important. The only unknown is the tyres: the choice is not obvious.”

Martin and Marquez fall, but limit the damage

Martin crashed in the final part of Q2, while trying to close on Pecco’s time. Even Marc Marquez, who appeared to be in difficulty during qualifying, ended up in the gravel: 5th time for the Catalan, who will start from the second row sandwiched between another Ducati (Bezzecchi) and the Yamaha of a surprising Quartararo, who progressed from Q1 in the company of Di Giannantonio. Jorge showed up in the parc fermé with his suit all torn: «Today the riders all went faster: we are at the limit. Pecco is in great shape, it will be difficult to stay close to him: but I feel good, it will be a good fight. I’m a bit worried about the start, because on the grid I’ll be at a point where the track is a bit dirty.”

Bastianini on the front row, can help Pecco

At the start, Bastianini could lend a hand to his teammate: the Rimini native starts from the front row, next to Bagnaia. «We’re okay on time-attack, I knew that qualifying would go well». In view of the race, however, the sensations are less positive. «In terms of pace, I’m a little behind the trio (Pecco-Martin-Marquez): we need to get some things right, because when I’m not completely right with the bike I suffer more than the others». Third row for Acosta, Di Giannantonio and Alex Marquez, the fourth is opened by an unfortunate Morbidelli (with Zarco and Vinales), who also ended up upside down while he was setting a great time.
