Today many of them are empty and falling into disrepair. The water towers are often listed buildings and some of them have been renovated at great expense in recent years.

What does it look like inside a water tower and what is it like to live there?

Holiday apartment in the Potsdam water tower at Sanssouci Park

The German-Spanish couple Katrin Wirth and Daniel Alonso González bought and renovated the tower at the Kaiserbahnhof near Potsdam’s Sanssouci Park ten years ago. The owner says she immediately fell in love with the tower. However, the renovation was sometimes complicated. “But it is normal to encounter obstacles during renovation,” explains architect Wirth.

Today the couple offers the converted apartment in the former water reservoir as a holiday apartment. You can live in elegant minimalism on six floors. There is also a roof terrace with a view of the New Palace – the owners had the tiled roof removed and put in an accessible flat roof.

The water tower in Potsdam was built at the beginning of the 20th century at the former Kaiserbahnhof in Potsdam. Since the development of the German railway network, water towers have been necessary at train stations. At first there were often just water tanks integrated into the station buildings.

Only later did they develop into independent towers that supplied water to fill up to ten locomotive tenders. The water tower in Sanssouci Park was used to fill the locomotives that stopped at the Kaiserbahnhof – the station itself is now a training center for Deutsche Bahn.

The real estate agent, who specializes in monuments and special properties, reports that the water tower was sold in 2003 to a family who had the historic building completely renovated. Today there are two apartments on three floors in the tower. A total of 220 square meters of living space is available.

The water tower in the old town of Nauen is a prime example of its kind: It was built in 1898 to secure the growing city’s water supply. By storing the water in a large elevated tank, gravity alone created a constant pressure throughout the city’s water network.

The outer walls reflect the curve of the tower. But every room also has right angles and straight walls – because the floors are divided. When the weather is clear, according to the seller, you can see as far as Berlin. There is an elevator.

During the renovation, the real estate agent says, the entire top of the tower was removed – a new building was created on the tower shaft, so to speak.

The octagonal solid brick building was built around 1900 by the Deutsche Reichsbahn. Like many other water towers at train stations, this one was also used to refuel steam locomotives.

Niederlehme water tower as an extraordinary building

There is a proud colossus right on the Berliner Ring near Niederlehme (Dahme-Spreewald): a water tower made entirely of sand-lime brick – many drivers know the impressive building. However, the piece of jewelry is increasingly falling into disrepair. Stones keep coming loose from the cornice.

The water tower was built in 1902 by the Berlin building contractor Robert Guthmann. The structure, which is 27 meters high, is modeled on the Byzantine Galata Tower in Istanbul with a conical roof. It supplied the town of Niederlehme with water until the 1960s.

After 1990 the tower was privately owned. In 2019, the city of Königs Wusterhausen acquired the water tower. There is currently no concrete usage concept.

Basically only the base of the tower is usable. There are windows in the upper area, but that is precisely why this part cannot be used: drivers on the A10, which runs directly next to it on a bridge, should not be blinded by light from the tower. In September, the CDU submitted a motion to the city council to review the use. According to a city spokeswoman, this application is still being discussed.
