Caracas expresses discomfort over Brazil’s veto in BRICS – Diario La Página –

Venezuela said this Thursday that Brazil vetoed its entry into the BRICS during the summit held in the Russian city of Kazan, in an act that it considered an “aggression” and “hostile gesture.”

The country had the “backing and support of the countries participating in this summit for the formalization of its entry into this integration mechanism”, but “the representation of the Brazilian Foreign Ministry (Itamaraty), led by ambassador Eduardo Paes Saboia, decided maintain the veto that (former President Jair) Bolsonaro applied to Venezuela for years,” the Caracas Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

This action “constitutes aggression against Venezuela and a hostile gesture,” continued the Foreign Ministry, which also called the veto “inexplicable and immoral.”

The relationship between Brazil and Venezuela became sour and distant after the presidential elections on July 28 in which the re-election of Nicolás Maduro was proclaimed amid allegations of fraud.

His counterpart Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has insisted on the detailed dissemination of the electoral records. The electoral result is accused of being fraudulent by the majority opposition and questioned by various governments, including Lula’s.

The former foreign minister and advisor to the Brazilian Government Celso Amorín had anticipated that the Government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva would not promote Venezuela’s entry into the BRICS, founded in 2009 by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

Venezuela has been seeking for months to be an active member of the bloc. Maduro traveled to Kazan to meet with BRICS partners and Russian President Vladimir Putin had expressed his support for him.
