Checo Pérez’s anger over the elimination in Q1 in Mexico

Sergio Pérez had his worst performance in a qualifying session at his home race, the Mexican Grand Prix, when he finished 18th to start from the ninth starting row on Sunday alongside Oscar Piastri’s McLaren in race 20 of the 2024 season.

The Mexican’s braking problems occurred since Saturday morning practice when he could not keep the RB20 on the trajectory or extend the braking as much as possible without sacrificing his performance.

The difficulties continued from his first round with soft tires in Q1 when he immediately ended up in the elimination zone, falling to 20th position, more than a second behind the leaders of the first round.

In his last attempt, Checo Pérez managed to improve his pace with soft tires, but it was barely enough to place him in 15th position before falling dramatically.

The video published by Formula 1 on its social networks shows the communication between Sergio Pérez and his engineer Hugh Bird, who informs him in real time how he is being eliminated, this while the team keeps Checo’s car in the garage.

“Ok, right now you’re 15,” is the first thing Bird is heard saying to Checo before mentioning that in the end it was “16.” The result caused anger in the Mexican driver, who has only mentioned that his mission will be to try to limit the damage on Sunday by looking for a comeback to try to save the points.
