The ruling Georgian Dream party received more than 50 percent of the vote in the parliamentary election after 90.42 percent of ballots were counted, according to the Central Election Commission.

Opposition parties in Georgia have threatened not to recognize the results.

Although the final results have not yet been announced, preliminary data released by the Central Election Commission of Georgia promises victory for the ruling “Georgian Dream”. The opposition does not agree with this.

“This is a stolen election, this is a usurpation of power and a constitutional coup in Georgia. That won’t happen. This is not Russia, this is not Venezuela – this is Georgia,” said the leader of the Coalition for Change, Nika Gvaramia, whose party, according to preliminary data, received about 11.2% of the vote.

Tina Bokuchava, chairwoman of the Unity coalition’s National Movement party (preliminarily 9.8% of the vote), accused the authorities of stealing victory and the European future from the Georgian people.

“We do not and will not recognize the results of these stolen elections,” she said.

Opposition parties promise to announce their plans for further action later – after consultations.

Meanwhile, the authorities assure that the opposition will not be able to do anything about the situation.

“The opposition does not have the capacity to carry out a coup or a revolution in the country. When you organize a coup, you must have the support of society and the people. Today the opposition, this radical group has been defeated,” said Kakha Kaladze, general secretary of the Georgian Dream party (preliminarily 53% of the vote) and mayor of Tbilisi.

In addition, non-governmental organizations also do not recognize the preliminary data of the Central Election Commission for the parliamentary elections.

“The elections were not fair. In the pre-election period, we saw that state institutions acted in favor of the ruling party, did not react to specific violations, and the same continued on election day. (…) The results published by the Central Election Commission do not reflect the will of the citizens of Georgia.

There were many problems in conducting the elections and these results are definitely illegitimate,” said Eka Gigauri, Executive Director of Transparency International Georgia.
