An impending trial will plunge the rugby world into yet another tragedy. Two French ultra-right activists will appear before the Paris assize court accused of doing this killed the former Argentina rugby international Federico Martin Aramburu in March 2022 in the French capital.
The former Biarritz, Perpignan and Dax center or winger, who won 22 caps for Argentina, was shot several times after an altercation in a bar in Paris’s 6th arrondissement. He was 42 years old, retired from sport and living in Biarritz, where he worked in tourism.
The defendant has already been convicted of violence
Loïk Le Priol, 30 years old, and Romain Bouvier, 33 years oldboth known for their right-wing extremist activism and previously convicted of violence, are being tried for this premeditated murder. According to the prosecution, they “voluntarily killed Federico Martin Aramburu (…)” by firing multiple projectiles at him from a firearm in vital areas and from behind“.
You will also have to answer for it serious violence at gatherings and with weapons against former French rugby player Shaun Hegarty, who accompanied the victim that evening, and possession of a weapon. Two other people are charged with complicity in the murder and aiding and abetting the escape of one of the defendants.
The unfolding of the facts
On the morning of March 19, 2022, Federico Martin Aramburu and Shaun Hegarty were in a bar on Boulevard Saint-Germain before going to the Stade de France to attend the France-England match of the Six Nations Tournament. There was then an altercation with Loïk Le Priol and Romain Bouvier.
After leaving the bar on foot, Aramburu and Hegarty were pursued by the two militants, who shot at them multiple times, fatally striking the former Argentina international in two separate scenes.
A respected champion
This tragedy caused great emotion in the rugby world. Aramburu was a respected player who played for several French clubs such as Biarritz, Perpignan and Dax and wore the Argentina jersey 22 times. His sudden disappearance shocked his former teammates and opponents.
