The Kaluz Museum takes an x-ray of Guerrero, a neighborhood with personality

The Kaluz Museum inaugurates the exhibition La Guerrero on everyone’s lips: Neighborhood stories as part of the celebration of the 150 years of the founding of this historic neighborhood in Mexico City.

When touring the rooms it is possible to see the buildings and streets of the emblematic city neighborhood, but of greater importance are those who walk through its streets, markets and parks, the real protagonists.

Miguel Fernández Félix, director of the Kaluz Museum, pointed out that the exhibition marks a curatorial concept in conjunction with the community.

Root waves and pride give identity to those who affirm: I’m from Guerrero, here I stayfrom a neighborhood that It is synonymous with partying, dancing and coexistence, and this is reflected in its streets, churches and dance halls..

The x-ray in time of this colony begins in the space La Voz del Kaluz, which adds an auditory archive to the museum’s collection. Stories from neighbors, researchers and intellectuals allow us to delve into the life of these streets, among them Sergio Raúl Arroyo, Miguel Nieto, director of the Salón Los Ángeles, or Doña Chabelita, tenant of the 2 de Abril market, who was born and raised in this place.

The series The Guerrero on everyone’s lips It is made up of 27 podcasts, of which 11 are already available, and the rest will be released in the coming months. The platforms that host the recordings are Spotify, Amazon and YouTube, since they also have video.

A photo of a child with a cake and a map welcomes the public to the exhibition The Warrior on everyone’s lips, which is divided into three thematic modules. The first is Urban Reconfiguration, in which the transformation of this territory is explored, from its pre-Hispanic antecedents; the foundation, in 1874, during the time of President Sebastián Lerdo de Tejada; the importance of the railroad station in Buenavista, as well as some notable buildings, such as Antonieta Rivas Mercado’s house.

Reconciliation and resistance addresses the division caused by the expansion of Paseo de la Reforma during the mandate of Ernesto P. Uruchurtu, and the emergence of collectives after the 1985 earthquake, when its inhabitants came together to rebuild their homes and recovery of public space and social fabric.

Today that fight continues. Community organizations work tirelessly to preserve the identity and sense of belonging of the Guerrerois explained in the sample.

Finally, Cults and Rituals explores traditional festivals, the importance of temples such as Santa María La Redonda and San Hipólito, famous for the devotion to San Judas Tadeo, along with the lively life provided by spaces such as the disappeared Salón México along with the Salón Los Ángeles, as well as the Blanquita theater.

Maps, photographs, paintings, publications, testimonies and historical documents draw this mosaic of views that build a landscape over time of a neighborhood with personality and deep roots, which also persists in the midst of urban problems, such as gentrification.

The curators, Ricardo Urueta and Carlos López, dedicated years of research, along with sound curator Isaac Torres. Likewise, the exhibition was carried out thanks to the collaboration of nine civil associations and the archives of 15 institutions.

The Kaluz Museum, located on the corner of Paseo de la Reforma and Hidalgo Avenue, in front of Alameda, is part of the Guerrero neighborhood, so it is inserted from one of the ends of the historic neighborhood. Miguel Fernández Félix highlighted that the Kaluz Museum turns four years old and from the beginning he took on the task of establishing a direct relationship with the community; we are part of the warrior.

As part of this link, entry is free for the neighbors, with whom an exchange is made, since the Kaluz has carried out workshops and activities that involve them outside its walls.
