For a month, iOS 18 has been available to everyone, bringing various new customization features as well as updates to native applications, including the Calculator. The latter has finally appeared on the iPad after fourteen years of absence, and it now offers features such as a calculation history and unit converter.

Math Notes in the Notes app and across the operating system

Among the main new features of the Calculator application in iOS 18, we find its integration with the Notes application and various aspects of the operating systemallowing you to solve any mathematical formula, whether simple or complex.

How does Math Notes work? It’s very simple. Just type an operation using the keyboard, your finger, or Apple Pencil, then press the equal sign, and it will be resolved automatically. Operations range from simple additions to formulas with unknowns. This feature can also graph functions by writing them, e.g. y=f(x).

You can access Math Notes by opening the Notes app and following the process mentioned, or by opening the Calculator app and tapping the corresponding icon to access Math Notes.

A converter of all kinds of units

With iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, the Calculator app added a unit converteractivated by pressing the calculator symbol inside the application, the same used for Math Notes. This converter allows you to convert between many units, such as:

  • Coins : euros, dollars, pounds, pesos, yen, yuan, etc.
  • Angles : degrees, radians, minutes of arc, among others.
  • Surface : square meters, square kilometers, hectares, square miles, acres, etc.
  • Data : bits, bytes, gigabytes, etc.
  • Energy : calories, joules, kilojoules, kilowatt hours, newton meter, among others.
  • Force : dynes, kilograms-force, newtons, pounds-force, etc.
  • Fuel : gallons per 100 miles, kilometers per liter, miles per gallon, etc.
  • Length : meters, kilometers, miles, light years, parsecs, feet, inches, etc.
  • Power : watts, kilowatts, horsepower, BTU per minute, etc.
  • Pression : atmospheres, bars, pascals, millimeters of mercury, etc.
  • Vitesse : kilometers per hour, meters per second, miles per hour, knots, etc.
  • Temperature : Celsius, Fahrenheit, Kelvin.
  • Temps : years, days, hours, seconds, weeks, etc.
  • Volume : liters, gallons, cubic meters, spoonfuls, fluid ounces, etc.
  • Weight : grams, kilograms, ounces, metric tons, etc.

Button to clear and calculation history

Another new feature is the dedicated button to erase numbers easily. Previously, you had to swipe left on the screen to delete numbers, but with iOS 18, a button was added to make this easier.

Additionally, a calculation history has been integrated, accessible from the upper left corner, where it is possible to consult all the operations carried out, which is very useful for reviewing previous calculations.

The scientific calculator is now also vertical

Previously, to access the scientific calculator, it was necessary to turn the iPhone to landscape mode. With iOS 18, it is now possible to use it in a vertical position. Just touch the calculator symbol at the bottom and select the option “ Scientist“, which will add more buttons to perform more complex calculations.

Without a doubt, we are witnessing a great upgrading of theapplication Calculatricewhich becomes much more complete and eliminates the need to use third-party applications. Additionally, you can add it to one of the shortcuts on lock screen or Action Button for faster access.
