The Minerva group sent 800 workers at Frigorífico BPU, located in Durazno, to unemployment insurance, as reported by La Diaria and confirmed by Montevideo Portal by the president of the Federation of Meat Workers and Associated Industry (Foica), Martín Cardozo.
According to Cardozo, the company said it was necessary to “restructure wages”. In this sense, they proposed an agreement that included a reduction in wages; “The situation is, if they accepted it, they would go to work,” but if they rejected the offer, they would be sent to unemployment insurance.
Therefore, the workers decided not to agree to the company’s proposal. According to Cardozo, Minerva “uses the unemployment insurance mechanism to pressure workers to sign wage reductions,” a mechanism it has used at other times, he said.
When asked how much of a pay cut that was, the union leader said it varies by department, but ranges from about $5,000 to $20,000 or even more in some cases.
According to Cardozo, those 800 workers were sent to unemployment insurance in mid-September. From that date until now the union has continued to not accept the proposal, but made two proposals “to try to resolve or improve the compromise.” “They aim to lose wages and benefits, but the company did not accept it.
According to him, the amount suggested by the workers as salary loss is lower than what the company is willing to accept.
“The compromise is stuck” and the Executive Branch “can’t do much” about it, Cardozo concluded.
