Rapid developments in the case involving the mercury murder in Thessaloniki, where a 50-year-old woman allegedly poisoned her husband with the liquefied metal. In fact, as the first police data show, she bought 23 thermometers before the 60-year-old died, six years ago.
According to the latest information, the woman administered the heavy toxic metal to her husband through the ears.
The thermometers were allegedly bought from two pharmacies in Panorama and Perea. In fact, the 50-year-old was telling the pharmacists that she was taking them in order to donate them to a KAPI, but also to people she cares for.
In her plea, she admitted buying the thermometers, but claimed she sent them to her sister in Poland.
However, for now something of all this has been proven and the case is under investigation.
How the Resistance Became ‘Murder by Mercury’
In June 2018, the victim was in the hospital with a stroke. In July, doctors found mercury in his ears, but also in the sheets. The Police were informed and the doctors testified that they do not use this element.
Toxicology tests were done, no mercury toxicity was found, but elevated levels of lorazepam, a powerful substance found in anxiolytics, were found. Doctors could not figure out how this substance was found in the patient’s body. The victim’s only visitors were his wife and son. Finally, the 60-year-old was discharged at the end of July.
A month and a half later the man ended up. According to information, there was no autopsy, no toxicology, and no preliminary investigation by EL.AS. because the death certificate listed cardiac arrest as the cause. The certificate was signed by a private doctor, who did not know the victim’s history.
Security was informed of the incident and on December 19, 2018, the body was exhumed.
Toxicology showed elevated levels of mercury. New medical opinions were requested and his home was also searched. All the material was collected and completed in 2021 where they were handed over to the prosecutor. Initially the case was filed.
How the “mercury murder” case was opened
But in June 2023, security opened the drawer again and took out the case file.
The case was dropped after an anonymous phone call. According to Star information, a man from the 60-year-old’s environment contacted the police a few months ago and claimed that the victim’s wife was poisoning his friend with mercury.
The Prosecutor’s Office requested a supplementary Preliminary Examination with the case file to be submitted in December 2023 and the judiciary to proceed with prosecutions.
The testimony of the 50-year-old
The woman appeared before the first investigator at the Thessaloniki Courthouse on the charge of manslaughter against her 60-year-old husband.
In her testimony, as revealed by the Star, Rallio Lepidou also said: “Everything is as it should be. My husband died 6 years ago from a heart attack. That’s what the results showed. I haven’t done anythingI don’t know who might have taken the police and reopened the file».
