Trouble over elbowing – Bochum loses basketball thriller against Münster

Bochum. The Uni Baskets Münster show a great comeback in Bochum, the VfL basketball players don’t reward themselves – and are angry afterwards.

Bitter disappointment for the Bochum basketball players, party in the guest block: The Uni Baskets Münster celebrated a 78:77 victory with their fans on Saturday evening. They turned the game around in the last minute. The Bochum team, on the other hand, lost what they thought was a certain victory in front of almost 1,500 fans. They suffered their first home defeat and in the final phase also lost Tom Alte, who had to be replaced in the last minute with a laceration while holding his face.

This scene made Bochum’s managing director Tobias Steinert angry: “Tom gets hit with an elbow and has to go out bleeding. It is incomprehensible to me that a foul was called against him during this scene,” said Steinert, who had previously been dissatisfied with several referee decisions. Münster’s coach Götz Rohdewald wished Alte all the best. He doesn’t believe it was a deliberate blow.

“In the end, the referees had a say in the game, it wasn’t even,” said Tobias Steinert, who was proud of his team – but also disappointed that the Bochum team didn’t take advantage of their chances when they had the victory in their own hands.

VfL basketball players squander a big lead

Bochum had an 18-point lead at 68:50 in the early stages of the fourth quarter – then the collapse came. Bochum then only scored nine points, Münster 28.

Münster’s Cosmo Grühn hit all three of his three-point attempts in the final quarter and led the comeback. He scored twice within a few seconds from the right corner, making the points 69 to 74 – Matthew Groce added the last four and gave Munster the lead with 53 seconds left, for the first time since the opening stages.

Bochum no longer had an answer, although Münster lost the ball and offered Bochum opportunities: Jonas Grof and twice Lars Kamp missed the chance for the decisive basket. In the final phase, both teams missed several free throws – crucial in a game that was ultimately decided by one point.

Münster’s coach praises Bochum’s performance

“Bochum completely took us out of the game in the first half,” said Münster coach Götz Rohdewald, “when we started hitting the threes, the momentum changed. Both deserved to win, Bochum perhaps even a little more than us. But we always believed in it.”

After an even initial phase, the Sparkasse Stars took control. Bochum also hit the threes better, even if the Americans Braxton and Kalthoff in particular did little overall. VfL again impressed with good defense and went into the break with a 40:29 lead and even extended it until the 31st minute – then almost everything worked for Münster, but only a little for Bochum.

“We made certain mistakes in the crucial situations,” said Banobre, who didn’t want to criticize his team overall. Tobias Steinert also said: “Despite the defeat, I am proud of the team and the audience. We played a good game for three and a half quarters and actually controlled it. It’s a shame that we didn’t take advantage of our chances when we had victory in our hands again at the end.”

Three wins, three defeats

With three wins and three defeats, VfL is still doing well despite a demanding opening program. With the game at the Dresden Titans (1:5), a supposedly easier opponent awaits next Saturday evening.

After that there is a double game day – first the next home game against the Artland Dragons (Fri., November 8th), then another away game in Vechta (Sun., November 10th)
