Investment in the mining industry is down in Mexico

Given the restrictions on mining exploration, investment in the industry in the country has fallen, revealed Pedro Rivero González, president of the Mining Chamber of Mexico (Camimex).

The manager reported that they hope to close this 2024 with an investment in the mining sector of around 5 billion dollars, which, he acknowledged, unfortunately, has gone down, because by 2025 they estimate an investment of 3.8 billion dollars.

“We have had some restrictions, especially in mining exploration, which is the beginning of our chain, since this leads to fewer investments downstream. It is very important that we are able to reactivate all the permits that we have lagged in recent months and years to be able to reactivate the operations that are currently in need of permission to continue operating and activate new operations; and, also, that the pace of investment can continue. The reactivation of exploration is very important,” stated the also current general director of Autlán.

During the presentation of the report: “Conscious mining. Sustainability 2024”, the president of the Mining Chamber of Mexico, Pedro Rivero, explained that the legal framework that has to do with mining activity is very robust, already today, the number of laws, regulations and norms that available for a mining project is quite extensive and complete.

However, he said, there is a lot of confusion about what a mining concession means, because sometimes it is thought that a mining concession means a license to own a surface, which is very far from reality, the concession is a right over the subsoil of the nation, which belongs to the nation, and cannot be confused, that as those interested in producing minerals, we must approach those who own that surface and we must agree on the correct way in which this should be done. treat.

“The regulations that exist today have worked and drive activity. There are always areas of opportunity and there are always better ways to operate. In order to obtain more investment, which we are seeking to promote from our members, we must be clearer in communicating what we are requesting. The authority too, to the extent that they are more capable of presenting to us the concerns they have, so that we can respond. From the point of view of current regulations, there is a lot that can be done,” acknowledged the president of Camimex.
