Israeli military forces withdrew from the Kamal Atouan Hospital complex a day after raiding it and detaining dozens of male staff members and some patients, according to Hamas’ health ministry.
Palestinian officials said yesterday that Israeli forces attacked Kamal Antoan, one of three hospitals struggling to keep afloat in the northern Gaza Strip.
Footage released by Hamas’ health ministry, the authenticity of which has not been cross-checked, shows destruction in several buildings after the withdrawal of Israeli forces.
At least 44 of the hospital’s 70 staff members were taken into custody by the military, according to hospital sources. Later, the Israeli army released 14 of them, including the hospital director.
A spokesman for the Israeli military declined to comment on the information. Yesterday, the Israeli military announced that it had carried out an operation in the area based on information about the “presence of terrorists and terrorist infrastructure” there.
Hospital sources said at least two children died inside the Intensive Care Unit after Israeli fire hit generators and the hospital’s oxygen station.
Members of the medical and nursing staff refused to follow the orders of the Israeli army to move away from the hospital or leave the patients. Before the raid by the Israeli army at least 600 people were in the hospital, including patients and their companions.
“The safety and lives of patients who have been left inside the Kamal Antoan Hospital without medical staff and necessary medication are now at risk,” said Marwan al-Hams of the Gaza Ministry of Health.
Three members of the nursing staff were injured and three ambulances were destroyed during the Israeli raid, according to the ministry.
Israel has announced that the army has returned to the northern sector of the Gaza Strip to disperse the militant groups that have begun to regroup there. The Israeli army announced yesterday the death of three soldiers in the northern part of the Palestinian enclave.
The International Committee of the Red Cross described the situation in the northern sector of the Gaza Strip as dire and called for safe passage for people who want to leave the zone.
Bassem Naim, a senior Hamas official, said the incursions into northern Gaza and the raid on Kamal Antoine Hospital constituted a violation of international humanitarian law that could not have been done without “the protection of Western countries.”
Israel routinely accuses Hamas of using the civilian population and infrastructure, including hospitals and mosques, for military purposes.
