The first training program turned out to be intense. The teams focused on working with aerodynamics. At an altitude of 2240 m in Mexico City, the aerodynamics and cooling systems were not working at full capacity. At maximum power settings – like in Monaco, the cars were pressed down less than in the Monza at high speed.

Each team must put a young driver behind the wheel in one of the training sessions twice during the season. In Mexico City, temporary replacements took place in five teams at the same time. In Ferrari, Oliver Berman drove Charles Leclerc’s car, in McLaren, Pato O’Ward replaced Lando Norris, in Aston Martin, Felipe Drugovich drove in Fernando Alonso’s car, in Sauber, Robert Schwartzman replaced Guanyu Zhou, in Mercedes, Andrea Kimi Antonelli drove in instead of Lewis Hamilton.

In the morning the asphalt was not in the best condition, the teams started the session with hard tyres. In the Highlands, the difference between the temperature of the air and the asphalt was more than double, and it was also necessary to accept this.

Already in the fifth minute the session was stopped with red flags – just before the first turn there was a part that Antonelli managed to run into. The cars returned to the pits, the debris was removed and a few minutes later the racers were back on track.

Another 15 minutes passed and the red flags appeared again – Alex Albon was thrown out after contact with Berman. At the exit of turn 9, Williams’ car lost stability and hit Oliver’s Ferrari, which stopped on the track with a damaged front suspension.

The accident happened right in front of Shvartsman, who was on a fast lap and had to stop on the way. Formally, it passed under yellow flags.

Stewards reviewed the events after the session. Albon and Berman avoided sanctions, and Schwartzman will lose five places at the start of the “next race.” The stewards accepted that Robert should not have started, but used the usual punishment in this case.

Berman returned to the Ferrari pits on a scooter, Albon was sent to a medical center for a check-up. The marshals put the barriers back and the riders set off again.

Many switched to soft tires, and speeds increased. Colapinto went off track at Turn 12. Verstappen lost speed due to problems with the power unit and returned to the pits.

George Russell set the best time, completing a lap in 1:17.998 – already almost a second faster than last Friday in Mexico City.
