BG workers are a dream for every sheikh
You speak super English and you don’t want a lot of money, they are happy in Abu Dhabi
Paradise in the middle of the desert – this is the United Arab Emirates (UAE). How can mountains of gold be born from a handful of sand? “Standard” reveals the recipe in the “Reports from the desert” series. And more – how do you do business with the sheikhs? Why are our people a dream for every boss in the emirates? Are all women in Abu Dhabi really princesses? And are the beaches of Dubai a mirage for Bulgarians? Read only in “Standard”.
“In the Emirates, everyone knows their place and gets paid according to their ability and nationality,” says a Belgian computer specialist who has lived in Al Ain for 4 years. At the lowest level are Indians who work on construction sites and as hotel valets. They are followed by Pakistanis employed in higher positions in tourism. The vendors and waiters are Filipino. Citizens of Sri Lanka and Bangladesh drive taxis, and Arabs from North Africa and the Middle East work as teachers in schools and universities. Doctors, IT specialists and all kinds of narrow specialists are Europeans. Among the Europeans, the British are looked upon with the best eye, but the Americans have the greatest weakness. However, the managers are local.
According to unofficial information, there are 3,500 Bulgarians in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The majority of them work in the local airlines “Emirates” and “Etihad”. About 30 doctors, engineers, as well as management and hotel staff have come to the Emirates in search of a better life. Doctors are especially well received. In general, however, almost all our compatriots enjoy a good attitude. “We like them when we follow their rules,” says our diplomat. “People came to work and integrate quickly. Most of them left Bulgaria for economic reasons. Here they find good employment, secure incomes and a normal lifestyle, and besides, they live in a wonderful place,” adds his colleague. Locals explain the fact that Bulgarians are welcome in the emirates in another way.
You are European, you are educated
You speak English much better than others, and you don’t ask for much money,’ they say.
Although the number of Bulgarians in the emirates is impressive, one cannot speak of a classical community abroad. There is a constant turnover, as the majority work for 3 to 5 years. A few stay for 10 years, and due to the lack of a pension system, there are no people willing to spend their old age in the emirates.
Bulgarians permanently residing in the UAE do not create anger in the country, assures our diplomat. “Problems are created by some tourists who forget that they are in a Muslim country, no matter how liberal it is. Some even dare to sit down drunk behind the wheel,” adds the diplomat.
Surprisingly, Hristo Stoichkov is not our business card in the UAE. Our most famous compatriots are artists and pentathletes. The school of pentathlete Mihail Kuzev has existed in the country for more than 10 years. His sister Maria Kuzeva, who is also a national champion, as well as coach Dimitar Kestenov, also work there.
“Our artist Kamen Bonev is very well received here. Last year he received an audience award in the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah. He works in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Europe. He is a very big patriot and one of the few artists in the world who painted a picture live in 7 minutes, at the same time – very attractive”, says our consul general with pride.
