Even if the wave of illness that accompanied the start of autumn has subsided somewhat, a comparatively large number of people still suffer from acute respiratory infections for this time of year. These are mainly the coronavirus and cold viruses such as rhinoviruses. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) counts 6.9 million cases across Germany. in his weekly report. For comparison: In the previous week there were 7.4 million. The values have fallen particularly among school children between the ages of 5 and 14. However, the start of the autumn holidays in some federal states could cause subsequent fluctuations and increases.
Current Corona situation: The level of cases remains the same
The RKI reports almost 11,600 laboratory-confirmed corona cases. That’s about as many as in the previous week. However, this number is no longer meaningful because significantly fewer people are now being tested than during the pandemic. While rhinoviruses have been detected in all age groups, the coronavirus mainly occurs in adults aged 35 and over.
The virus load in wastewater has been increasing for several weeks. This is shown by wastewater monitoring by the RKI and the Federal Environment Agency. According to the most recent report, 13 of the 28 measurement locations in Bavaria indicate a “rising” trend for the week from October 14th to October 20th, and data is missing for three. “Increasing” means that the viral load has increased by around 15 percent compared to the previous week. However, the trend seems to be going downwards; last week there were still 21 locations with increasing values.
Corona variant XEC is becoming more widespread
The epidemic curve of the Bavarian State Office for Health and Food Safety for the week from October 14th to October 20th also falls slightly. Almost 2,900 cases were reported, compared to 3,050 the previous week. With 972 cases, Upper Bavaria is still far ahead among the administrative districts.
The proportion of the Corona variant KP.3 has hardly changed. It remains at the still high level of 40%. The Corona variant XEC is now becoming increasingly popular. It was detected in 39 percent of cases. In the previous week it was 34 percent.
