Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has to drop out of the COP16 meeting for the Convention on Biological Diversity in Cali, Colombia, writes Reuters news agency.
They quote a statement from the president’s office.
Lula was told not to travel because of a head injury, they say.
The UN conference is scheduled from October 21 to November 1. He was originally supposed to leave on Monday, October 28.
A stroke
Lula has been the president of Brazil since January 1, 2023. He took over from Jair Bolsonaro. The change of president also led to a change in Brazil’s position on issues of nature conservation and biological diversity.
Among other things, deforestation has decreased significantly since Lula came to power.
Reuters writes that the injury happened last weekend. The president underwent a medical evaluation on Friday, which showed his condition was stable after a fall.
The fall caused a small blow, and Lula had to be stitched up, the news agency wrote.
The Russia tour was cancelled
The president has already had to cancel a trip to Russia, where he was supposed to attend the BRICS summit (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Ethiopia and Iran).
Despite the fact that he is not allowed to attend the UN meeting, Lula is willing to fulfill his duties in Brasilia. He will be tested several times over the next five days, the president’s office says.
