End the old-fashioned practice of switching between daylight saving time and standard time (which starts on Sunday) as the change has a negative impact on physical and mental health. This is what a group of more than a hundred MEPs, from all political parties, want in a letter forwarded by popular Irish Seán Kelly and sent to the president of the EU Commission, Ursula von der Leyen . Bipartisan MEPs against summer time, it’s bad for your health Letter to von der Leyen, it harms sleep and increases the risk of stroke
“Several studies have shown that changing the clock can have a negative impact on heart attacks and strokes and lead to a spike in traffic accidents. the change could even increase energy consumption during the winter months”, explains the letter which includes Forza Italia supporter Salvatore de Meo among the signatories.
“Abolishing the time change is also in line with the EU’s commitment to simplification, reducing unnecessary burdens for citizens and simplifying everyday life across the Union. We are confident that the Commission can build on the momentum that has already been achieved and persuade. Abolishing the time change will be a practical and popular move that will bring huge benefits to citizens across Europe,” the letter concludes.
350,000 sign petition, daylight saving time is permanent
350 thousand Italians want to stop the summer/winter transition, and have signed the online petition launched on Change.org. This was said by the Italian Association of Environmental Medicine (Sima) and Consumerismo Non Profit which has encouraged a collection of signatures to ask the government for a permanent summer time.
On the night between Saturday 26 October and Sunday 27 October, Italians will have to say goodbye to summer, and the hands of the clock will be moved back an hour, with the days getting shorter in the evening thanks to the early darkness – explain Sima and Consumerism – A change that has a negative impact on many aspects.
“The transition from summer time to solar time and vice versa proves a negative impact on human health – explains the president of Sima Alessandro Miani – The circadian rhythm has changed, i.e. the biological clock of our growth- a loom that, without signals from the outside environment, completes its cycle in about 24 hours.
Other studies have then confirmed a correlation between the transition from summer time to normal time and the increase in road and workplace accidents: for example, during summer times, there was a reduction of up to -13% in accidents with pedestrians to record increased visibility on the roads in the evening hours. Although research conducted in Australia even found an increase in suicides in the first weeks of the time change. Not to mention the possible consequences of crime: with the time of the sun the hours of darkness in the evening are extended.
The European Union anticipates that it will be possible to eliminate the transition between summer and winter time with the European Union having already agreed in 2019 a Directive that will leave wide discretion to the Member States, hoping for coordination between the different countries to avoid the impact on trade and cross-border movements. “, concludes the president of Consumerismo, Luigi Gabriele.
