Google has just announced the arrival of a new section in its application for photos edited with AI-based tools. This transparency-based feature will allow users to better identify images modified by artificial intelligence.

Google officially announced the arrival of a new feature for its application Google Photos. This is a section “IA Info” that we spotted this summer. The latter will clearly indicate if an image has been modified using some of its tools powered by artificial intelligence, such as Magic Eraser, well known to us behind the name magic eraser, Magic Editor or Zoom Enhance. This new feature will be deployed from next week for all users.
Google Photos increases transparency on image editing with AI
This new “IA Info” section will be found directly in the information of each photoalongside the usual details such as file name, location and save status. Concretely, if an image has been retouched using tools like Magic Editor or the magic eraser, users will see a specific mention signaling theuse of AI. This is based on the IPTC standards, a standard used to describe the characteristics of a photo used by Google to make these changes visible.
In addition to indicating the modifications made with AI-based toolsGoogle Photos will use the additional information for features like Best Take and Add Me, found on Pixel devices. These allow you to combine elements from multiple photos taken at the same time to create an enhanced image, such as a better group shot. THE details of these alterations will be recorded in the form of metadata, following IPTC standards. The company, however, did not specify whether this information will be visible to users when viewing these photos.
