iPhone 16 Remains Illegal in Indonesia: Minister of Industry Confirms Lack of IMEI License and Compliance Issues

The Minister of Industry (Menperin), Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, confirmed again that the status of the iPhone 16 series in Indonesia is still illegal.

The reason is that the Ministry of Industry has not issued an International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) license for Apple’s latest cell phone.

“If iPhone 16 can work in Indonesia, that means I can say it’s illegal. Report to us, because the Ministry of Industry has not issued an IMEI license, “said Agus at his office, Jakarta, on Tuesday, October 22. 2024.

The reason is that the iPhone 16 is not yet available in Indonesia

According to Agus, Apple still needs to fulfill the investment commitments previously agreed with the Indonesian government.

Because of this, Apple could not pocket the 40 percent domestic participation rate value (TKDN). This is an obstacle for the iPhone 16 to be distributed legally in Indonesia in the near future.

“They still have to implement the commitments agreed between us and them,” said the Minister of Industry.

In addition to the Ministry of Industry, the issuance of IMEI also involves two other agencies, namely the Directorate General of Customs and Excise, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Communications and Digital (Komdigi).
