Houston: Helicopter crash-4 dead – THE STEP –

According to the BBC, a helicopter crashed into a radio transmission tower in Houston, United States on Sunday, killing four people, including a child, according to local authorities. The identities of the victims have not yet been released.

Houston authorities believe the aircraft was a private R44 helicopter, which took off from Ellington Field, about 15 miles (24 km) from the crash site. A large number of emergency personnel rushed to the scene.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) had earlier issued an alert that the tower’s lights were not working, according to local broadcaster KHOU-TV, an affiliate of the BBC’s US affiliate CBS News.

At a press conference at the scene of the crash, Police Chief J. Noe Diaz said there appeared to be no injuries on the ground. The crash caused an extensive fire, according to Fire Chief Thomas Munoz.

Speaking in the same late-night interview, he said: “Fortunately there were no residents, but it was close to residents”.
Houston Mayor John Whitmire added that it was “fortunate” that the collision did not cause a larger explosion. Some homes near the crash site had power outages, he said.
