The neighborhood Uzaiin the southern suburbs of Beirut, was tonight targeted by the Israeli army, which earlier called on the residents of many areas to leave them, the Lebanese news agency ANI reported.
It is the first time a target has been hit in this district since Israel’s military operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon began. Footage broadcast by AFP television shows smoke rising from two places. Agency correspondents also said they heard two loud explosions.
According to the Reuters agency, one hit occurred near the Rafik Hariri University Hospital of Beirut, located further north, in the Jna district. A hospital source said the target appeared to be the hospital parking lot.
At least three people were killed and dozens wounded in an Israeli strike near the capital’s biggest hospital, a senior Lebanese security source told Reuters.
This account was also confirmed by groups of rescuers linked to Hezbollah.
Israel, for its part, reported that about 170 rockets were fired today by Hezbollah towards Israeli territory.
