GAA Celebrates 140 Years with Unique Mosaic Tribute to Founder Michael Cusack

In a landmark initiative to commemorate the 140th anniversary of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), members and supporters are invited to contribute to a new artistic installation honoring the association’s founder, Michael Cusack. This project not only celebrates the legacy of a pivotal figure in Irish sports but also underscores the enduring spirit of volunteerism that has fueled the GAA since its inception in 1884.

Celebrating Volunteerism through Art

Set to be a central feature of the refurbished Cusack Stand, the mosaic will consist of hundreds of photographs depicting volunteers from various GAA clubs across Ireland and abroad. Each image will come together to form a larger representation of Michael Cusack, creating a visual testament to the countless individuals who have dedicated their time and effort to the organization over the decades.

"The mosaic epitomizes the vibrant spirit of volunteerism that is at the core of the GAA," said a spokesperson for the association. "We hope to evoke a sense of community and pride as we gather images that represent today’s volunteers alongside the legacy of our founder."

How to Participate

GAA clubs and members keen to take part in this historic project can submit their photographs under the following criteria:

  • Photograph Specifications: The image should be a clear head-and-shoulders shot of the volunteer against a plain, bright background.
  • File Size: Submissions should be at least 4MB in size, with smartphone photos being acceptable.
  • Age Requirement: Participants must be over 18 years old.
  • Consent: Volunteers must provide written consent for the use of their image by completing a provided document and submitting it along with their photograph to cusackmosaic@gaa.ie.
  • Participation Note: While all submitted photos will be considered for inclusion, submission does not guarantee placement in the final artwork.

A Reflection of Community Spirit

This artistic endeavor aims to engage GAA supporters from Tipperary and across Ireland, inviting individuals from all walks of life to reflect on their contributions to the association. "We are excited to see the diverse range of volunteers represented in the mosaic, creating a tapestry of faces that celebrate our communal commitment to the GAA,” added the spokesperson.

Impactful Legacy

The GAA has long been a cornerstone of Irish culture and community life, promoting not just sports but also social engagement and local identity. The planned mosaic tribute serves as a fitting reminder of the values and heritage that have unified generations of members.

As preparations for the mosaic progress, the GAA encourages clubs to spread the word, rallying volunteers to take part in this symbolic tribute that honors both the legacy of Michael Cusack and the ongoing contributions of GAA volunteers today.
