WhatsApp: Messenger gets its own contact management

In a blog post, WhatsApp announced new features for contact management. The options are intended to provide more convenience and flexibility on both linked devices and the main device. Messenger users will soon be able to add and manage contacts in the web and Windows versions. It will also be possible to save address book entries exclusively in WhatsApp. The cell phone’s address book remains unaffected. Finally, the development studio reports the current progress on the soon-to-be-launched username.

WhatsApp Inc. For some time now, the WhatsApp account can be used alongside the main smartphone on other devices such as other cell phones, tablets or computers. So far, users cannot manage contacts on such linked devices. This will change in the near future, as the development studio belonging to Meta reports. It will soon be possible to add new address book entries and edit them in the browser via WhatsApp Web and Windows. This should provide more comfort, especially due to the physical keyboard of the computers.

The second planned innovation relates to the way WhatsApp contacts are saved. The communication tool currently automatically synchronizes the people and companies entered with those on the cell phone. In the future, users can use the “Synchronize contact with phone” option to decide for themselves whether a synchronization takes place. If the user decides against this, the corresponding entry will only be stored in Messenger. This should be practical, for example, when using multiple WhatsApp accounts. In this way, private and professional contacts can be separated.

Progress on the username for WhatsApp

Some features take a long time to finally make it into the green messenger. So it was almost a year and a half ago when we first reported on the username for WhatsApp. Even in the beta versions of the chat program, the feature that makes cell phone number sharing obsolete cannot yet be used. In this respect, competitor Signal is significantly further ahead. Unfortunately, WhatsApp did not comment on the availability of the username.
