Good attention to milk when you take pills! What are these not “compatible” with?

Everyone already knows that alcohol or grapefruit should not be consumed when taking pills. However, recent research has shown that we should also be very careful with dairy products when we are taking certain medications.

Antibiotics taken orally, in pill or liquid form, must be absorbed into the bloodstream to work effectively. But when taken with dairy products such as milk, cheese or yogurt, some antibiotics are not absorbed properly, according to a recent study.

Research, cited by Living scienceshowed that when ciprofloxacin is taken with milk, blood levels of the drug are about 30 – 36% lower than when taken with water. This antibiotic is used to treat a wide range of illnesses, from pneumonia to gonorrhea.

There is less data on the effects of other dairy products, but studies generally show that they reduce antibiotic levels in the blood, although not necessarily as much as a glass of milk.

In general, milk has been found to reduce blood antibiotic levels, although other dairy products may have this effect, to a lesser or greater extent.

This interaction with dairy products is only a problem with some antibiotics, especially those in the tetracycline and fluoroquinolone classes. The interaction does not affect all antibiotics, the researchers emphasized.

Fortunately, it is not a difficult problem, one that cannot be avoided. “To ensure that the antibiotic works properly, patients should take the medicine 2 hours before or 6 hours after eating dairy products. This reduces the contact of calcium with the antibiotic in the digestive tract and ensures that the patient gets the maximum benefit from the drug,” explained Anastasiya Shor, a professor at the Touro College of Pharmacy in in New York.

It is also important to be aware of other sources of calcium or magnesium, such as antacids (heartburn medications) and dietary supplements. Like dairy products, these substances can reduce the effectiveness of some antibiotics, said the same scientist.
