Dozens of people were arrested today in the northern Uruguayan department of Salto, during anti-drug operations in which hundreds of police officers with air support participated.
It was the result of 27 raids, reported the Minister of the Interior, Nicolás Martinelli, at a press conference.
The police reported the seizure of various types of drugs, a firearm, ammunition and other objects “probably the product of theft.”
According to the media Subrayado, the detainees total 33, of them 22 men and three women. Several of those arrested have already appeared before the Prosecutor’s Office.
Uruguayan authorities recognize that the country is increasingly a site for drug collection by criminal organizations dedicated to drug trafficking.
On October 27, the date of national elections, Uruguayans will also vote for a plebiscite that seeks to approve nightly police raids.
Defenders of the initiative affirm that the battle against drug trafficking must occur 24 hours a day.
