Nuevas Ideas denied its votes to study a proposal that would prohibit the dismissal of people who participate in marches, this after learning of the dismissal of teacher Idalia Zúniga by the Ministry of Education after the union leadership participated in the march last Saturday .

It was the representative of the Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA), Marcela Villatoro, who proposed two reforms to the Labor Code and the Civil Service Law in order to respect the labor rights of the working class.

“Several people who attended the march say that afterwards they began to be harassed by some employers and that they felt worried and intimidated by this situation,” Villatoro commented. The most vivid example happened this Monday, when Idalia Zúniga, general secretary of the Salvadoran Magisterial Front (FMS), was notified that her position in the Ministry of Education was eliminated.

“There has been a clear violation of the Constitution here. Article 47 tells us about union immunity, and tells us that people who are part of the union boards cannot be fired, suspended, transferred or denigrated during the time they are part of the Board of Directors as well as a year later. ”Villatoro commented.

The reform in question was aimed at prohibiting dismissals in public and private institutions when peaceful demonstrations take place. “No one can do this because it will be prohibited by law, it is a form of immunity for all people who attend peaceful marches.”

The initiative was proposed in the plenary session via agenda modification; but the New Ideas deputies refused to study it.
