Rockslide in the Wachau: B33 could be released earlier

“We are doing everything we can to move forward as quickly as possible and bring forward the opening to traffic,” said State Vice President Udo Landbauer (FPÖ) in a broadcast on Tuesday. The work on the security measures will now be extended to seven days a week, and the relevant areas will also be strengthened.

Cautious optimism

Landbauer was “cautiously optimistic” about an earlier opening to traffic – without giving an exact date – “assuming the weather cooperates”. Bad weather or unexpected events could naturally hamper progress, it was confirmed.

Anyway, the “full performance of work” is now obsolete. Special staff have been found and are available. The safety work on the slope is very special, so it requires experienced and experienced workers as well as well-rehearsed teams.

6,000 cubic meters of rock

About 6,000 cubic meters of rock weighing about 12,000 tons fell between the towns of Aggsbach-Dorf and Aggstein on June 3. The stretch of road was closed and no one was injured. The B33 and the Danube cycle path cannot be moved. To avoid this, a shuttle bus was first established, and a ferry for cyclists started in July, which will run, according to the ÖAMTC, until the end of October. According to the club, an escape route is being planned for residents through a forest path, which will be turned into a road. Permit cards are provided.
