The actor, who became famous thanks to the TV series, was also a real lifeguard and also worked as a firefighter

Michael Newman, known to the public for playing the historical lifeguard in “Baywatch”, died at the age of 68 due to complications from Parkinson’s disease, a disease that was discovered in 2006. The news confirmed by a friend of his, Matt Felker, who directed, among other things, the docuseries “After Baywatch: Moment in the Sun”, he revealed to the magazine “People” that the actor died “due to heart problems” on the evening of Sunday 20 October 2024.

“I’ll see Mike one last time who was aware, he looked at me and in typical Mike style he said: “You’re just in time,” said Matt Felker, adding that the actor died “surrounded by his family and friends”. Born in Los Angeles, Michael Newman gained worldwide fame in the 1990s thanks to the role of Newmie, appearing in 150 episodes of the cult series where he was also the only member of the team that worked as a lifeguard in real life. He was also a firefighter, a career he continued while filming “Baywatch”. The actor has spent the last few years helping to raise money for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease with the Michael J. Fox Foundation.
