Thousands of migrants, mostly Venezuelans who left their country after the electoral crisis unleashed in July 2024, left this Sunday (10/20/2024) in a new caravan, from the southern border of Mexico bound for the United States.
The massive contingent of foreigners requested humanitarian aid from the Mexican Government for the journey they have undertaken in search of reaching the border with the United States. In the group, children and women are seen walking pushing strollers, under heavy rain that accompanies their journey along federal highway 200 that will take them to Mexico City.
This is the third largest caravan that has left Mexico during the Government of Claudia Sheinbaum. Migrants argue that their main reason for walking is due to the lack of employment and their desire to go to the United States.
“Let him help us, let him not be angry with the Latinos”
The young Venezuelan David Josué García Chirino, 18, declared to the EFE agency that his wish is to be able to study in the North American country, bring his family and offer him a different life. “It has been a little hard, but I have the faith to move forward to go to the United States because it is the only country (in which) we have the possibility of having a job that can help us move forward,” he commented.
Elí Castillo, originally from Venezuela, said that he worked as an Army sergeant and left that country because he did not agree with the ideology of President Nicolás Maduro‘s government. “Because they were giving orders that I could not comply with and, I am a human being like all Venezuelans, no, but I do not agree with the Government,” Castillo said.
Gilberto Herrero Mejía, another migrant from Venezuela, denounced that in his country the situation is critical and the money is not enough “at all” because, in his case, he was dedicated to driving a bus with a salary of 10 to 15 dollars, which which was insufficient to survive. He added that he has now decided to be able to reunite with his relatives in the United States to find work and support his family.
«That they help us, that they give us support because we want to behave well, we go with the same mind of not doing bad things, but we are going to work, without taking away anyone’s job. There is work for everyone, I believe. The United States is a big enough country that helps us, that doesn’t be angry with Latinos,” Herrero said.
Migrants from Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Nicaragua and Peru, among other nationalities, also travel in the caravan.
