Cork to host relics of St Bernadette of Lourdes for two days at the end of the month

Headline: St. Bernadette’s Relics to Arrive in Cork for Public Veneration

The relics of St. Bernadette of Lourdes will be visiting Cork next week as part of a two-month pilgrimage across Ireland, offering a rare opportunity for the public to venerate these sacred artifacts. The relics will be welcomed at the Cathedral of St. Mary and St. Anne in Cork City on Wednesday, October 30, and will be available for public veneration until November 1. This visit is not only a chance for spiritual renewal but also a meaningful connection to the experiences of countless pilgrims who travel to Lourdes each year.

A Spiritual Journey

St. Bernadette Soubirous, a young peasant girl, famously reported witnessing 18 apparitions of the Virgin Mary in Lourdes in 1858. These visions led to the establishment of a shrine that has become one of the world’s most renowned pilgrimage sites, attracting millions annually. The relics traveling through Ireland embody the spirit of Lourdes, offering a poignant reminder of faith for those who have been unable to visit the site in person.

According to Fr. Tom Hayes, the parish priest of Clonakilty, "A lot of people in Ireland have very close affections with Lourdes, and many have experienced its profound spiritual significance. This visit allows those who may never have been able to go to Lourdes a chance to connect with the relics of St. Bernadette."

Schedule of Events

The relics will be arriving at the Cathedral of St. Mary and St. Anne at 4 PM on October 30, where public veneration will commence shortly after from 4:20 PM to 6:45 PM. Following this, a concelebrated Mass led by Bishop Fintan Gavin will take place at 7 PM, with further veneration available from 8 PM to 10 PM.

On October 31, veneration will continue at the Cathedral from 6 AM to 12 PM, followed by Mass at 10 AM. Afterward, the relics will journey to the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Clonakilty, arriving around 2 PM. Public veneration in Clonakilty will occur from 2:30 PM to 7:45 PM, culminating in another Mass at 8 PM. The church will remain open for additional veneration from 9 PM to 10 PM that evening.

On November 1, the final opportunity for public veneration at the Clonakilty church will take place from 7 AM to 10 AM, concluding with a Mass at 10 AM before the relics leave for Athlone.

Bringing Petitions to the Shrine

Attendees are encouraged to bring their petitions, which will be placed in containers at both churches and then transported to the Lourdes shrine. This unique aspect of the visitation allows individuals to express their hopes and desires, fostering a deep personal connection with the sacred place.

For those unable to attend in person, Fr. Hayes noted that petitions could also be submitted online. “Those petitions will be compiled, downloaded to a USB stick, and sent with the relics to the Lourdes shrine,” he explained, ensuring that every voice is heard.

Community Impact

The visit of the relics is expected to attract large crowds, reflecting the spiritual fervor surrounding St. Bernadette’s legacy. With the pilgrimage generating enthusiasm throughout the country, local dioceses have been reporting large queues, a testament to the profound connection many Irish people feel toward Lourdes and its significance in their faith journeys.

"This event is a wonderful lead-up to the upcoming Jubilee Year 2025 with the theme ‘Pilgrims of Hope,’" said Archbishop of Armagh Eamonn Martin, highlighting the significance of the visit’s timing within the broader context of Catholic reflection and renewal.
