Russell Wilson had a dream debut with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Super Bowl-winning quarterback with the Seattle Seahawks threw two touchdown passes and ran for one more in his debut to lead his team to a 37-15 victory over the New York Jets led by Aaron Rodgers.
Wilson, 35, who spent the first six weeks of the season watching from the sideline while recovering from a calf injury, validated coach Mike Tomlin’s decision to hand the job to the nine-time Pro Bowl selection instead of Justin Fields, who played steadily, if not always spectacularly in his absence.
Although he is not at his best, Wilson looked more than capable of commanding the Steelers’ offense by throwing for 264 yards through the air, including touchdowns from his receivers George Pickens and Van Jefferson.
For its part, New York’s retooled offense, which now includes Davante Adams, who reunited with Rodgers earlier this week after being acquired in a trade from Las Vegas, couldn’t keep up and the Jets (2 -5) lost their fourth straight game, including an 0-2 mark under interim coach Jeff Ulbrich following the departure of Robert Saleh.
Rodgers had 276 yards with one touchdown and hit Adams three times for 30 yards, but he was also intercepted twice by Pittsburgh rookie Beanie Bishop.
